ISO 9000:2005 Leadership and involvement of people (superseded)
Leadership (top management) must establish the purpose and direction of the organization. They create the environment in which people become fully involved in achieving the organization's goals.

- Management committment 5.1
- Quality policy 5.3
- Quality objectives 5.4.1
- Responsibility and authority 5.5.1
- Internal communication 5.5.3
The commitment and active involvement of top management are essential for the development and maintenance of an effective quality management system with the objective of ensuring customer satisfaction (8.2.1)
Top management must develop and communicate it's quality policy and quality objectives (5.3 & 5.4.1) to ensure that people are aware of their roles and responsibilities (5.5.1) and encourage open, two-way communication (5.5.3).
