Auditing and reporting made easier

What are the main objectives of an internal audit?

ISO 9001 Help - Basic audit checklist

Whether you're undergoing an external audit for certification to management system standards like ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001, or improving your management system's internal audit regime; the internal audit checklists help ensure all the requirements are fully assessed and addressed.

Enhance your business's auditing capabilities with audit checklists that simplify the capture of management system performance data. The format of the audit checklist encourages the auditor to document objective evidence based on your business's processes, the characteristics of each process, and the requirements of the audit standard.

Choose from a range of individual and integrated internal audit checklists based on the requirements defined by the following standards; ISO 9001 Quality, ISO 14001 Environmental, and ISO 45001 Occupational health and safety.

What are the internal audit requirements?

The internal audit requirements arise from Subclauses 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 of standards like ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 45001 and their associated subparagraphs which provide a clear framework for conducting internal audits. The audit checklists comprise tables of the certifiable (‘shall’) requirements, phrased as a question, from Section 4.0 to Section 10.0 of each standard.

Use the internal audit checklists to undertake effective clause-by-clause audits in preparation for implementation, gap analysis, or certification as a means of storage and tracking of information for the audit trail. Retain the internal audit checklist as evidence of the implementation of the audit programme and the audit results.

By developing the ISO 9001 internal audit checklists to align with the concepts, guidelines and terminology given in ISO 19011:2018 Guidelines for Auditing Management Systems, the internal audit checklists deliver clear, concise and well-documented content that reduces the risk of nonconformities.

How do you do process audit?

Effective process auditing requires the auditor to identify and record audit trails that will make a difference to the business. Once your management system has matured, businesses should develop a process approach to their internal auditing programme in order to verify that individual management system processes are performing and producing outputs in accordance with the planned outcomes.

Use the process audit template, which replicates the turtle diagram from the internal audit procedure, to encourage the auditors to review the inputs, outputs, risks, controls, activities, equipment, materials, personnel and methods of measurement for all processes, activities and shifts.

The process audit does not assess all aspects of the management system at once. It instead relies on sampling the applicable requirements and reviewing operating procedures, work instructions, contracts, policies, plans, organization charts, flow charts, etc., including the linkages among these documents to determine effectiveness.

How do you conduct an internal audit?

The internal audit checklist is just one of the many tools which are available from the auditor’s toolbox that help ensure your audits address the necessary requirements. Completing the audit checklists and questionnaires encourages involvement and auditee participation whilst ensuring transparent conduct.

The fully editable internal audit checklists comprise the certifiable requirements from each respective management system standard, phrased as question, to help ensure that each clause is implemented and that your processes are delivering the expected outputs.

How do I prepare an ISO audit checklist?

We’ve all heard the term ‘audit criteria’ but what exactly does it mean? As defined in ISO 19011:2018, audit criteria are used as ‘a reference against which conformity is determined’. It goes on to say that ‘The criteria may include one or more of the following:

  1. Policies, processes, and procedures;
  2. Performance criteria including objectives, statutory and regulatory requirements, management system requirements;
  3. Information regarding the context and the risks and opportunities as determined by the auditee (including relevant external/internal interested parties’ requirements);
  4. Business sector codes of conduct or other planned arrangements.

Basically, all documented information that helps you to prove the consistency and compliance of your quality management system should be part of the scope for each individual audit. If you are auditing to verify that the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 are implemented, then the standard itself becomes the audit criteria.

If you are going to audit your quality management system documentation as per ISO 9001:2015, the audit criteria become ISO 9001:2015, and relevant quality management system documentation such as the quality manual, procedures, work instructions, standard operating procedures, and forms, etc.

If you are going to conduct a product audit against a production control plan, the audit criteria will be the control plan itself, or relevant parts of it. The same applies when auditing an operator to see whether they follow the Work Instruction, the audit criteria is the Work Instruction for that process and any applicable criteria.
