Setting up a management system?

Your organization may already have in place a management system, if this is the case, you will want to determine how closely your system conforms to the requirements ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and OHSAS 18001:2007.

Begin with the assumption that you are already doing most of what the standards require, you probably are! Many people talk about the high cost of implementing management systems but this is a false assumption. If you do it right and understand the standards, then implementation should not be a problem since 75% of your management system is already in place. In general, follow these simple steps:

Step 1 - Purchase and read copies of the related management system standards (e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001,etc.)
tick
Step 2 - Undertake a gap analysis of your existing management system to identify what elements need to be addressed to meet any new requirements.
tick
Step 3 - Use the information from Step 2, develop an action plan and schedule to implement the actions that are required to rectify each identified gap. tick
Step 4 - Begin collating evidence to provide assurance that your organization is regularly, 'or as necessary', reviewing and updating its external and internal issues. tick
Step 5 - Confirm that your organization has a methodology in place to effectively identify risks and opportunities with respect to EHQMS planning. tick
Step 6 - Update your management system's documents, and modify your processes and practices to meet the new requirements. tick
Step 7 - Provide employee training as appropriate to ensure all relevant people aware of changes to ensure effectiveness of the implementation. tick
Step 8 - Verify the effectiveness of the modifications using internal audits, documented information reviews and management reviews. tick
Step 9 - Plan and review the documented records of these activities to ensure timeliness and effectiveness. tick
