7.1.3 Infrastructure
Observe and record evidence to confirm that your organization has determined, provided and maintained the infrastructure it needs to operate its processes and to achieve conformity of its products and services. If you need a procedure and forms to help determine and control your business's infrastructure and process environment, click here.
Identify how your organization determines, provides, and maintains the infrastructure for the operation of processes to achieve product and service conformity. Consider all the things needed in order to deliver a product or service to the customer, wherever the work is done. This typically includes:
- Buildings and workspaces, and their associated utilities (gas, water, electricity, etc.);
- Tools and process equipment, including hardware and software;
- Transportation resources;
- Information and communication technology (I.T., networks, telephony, cloud services).
What changed in ISO 9001:2026: the note to 7.1.3 now makes clear that infrastructure applies to all types of work, whether it is done on site, remotely, or as a combination of the two (hybrid working). The list of infrastructure types is unchanged. In practice, check that your organization has considered the infrastructure that remote and hybrid workers rely on, for example laptops and home-working equipment, secure remote access (VPN, multi-factor authentication), cloud-based and collaboration software, data back-up and I.T. support. Annex A of the standard also notes that hybrid and remote work, and emerging technologies, can introduce new risks and opportunities for managing and controlling infrastructure, and that customers may have requirements for infrastructure, including its disposal or recycling.
Work environments required to achieve product conformity are managed as appropriate and checked using a Workplace Inspection Template. During informal or review meetings, the continued improvement of our buildings is discussed, and any items for improvement are recorded for action.
Planning for new and/or modification of existing facilities are normally conducted with capacity or work force expansions and product or process changes. Facilities may also be expanded or modified to improve productivity, quality and the work environment.
All requests for modifications or expansions of facilities must be reviewed and approved by the Department Head and the Quality Manager at a minimum. Requests for significant modifications or expansions must also be reviewed and approved by Top management.
